REENGINEERING A UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT

M.Sc. thesis defense by Christopher D. Curry

Onsdag den 10. marts 2004, kl: 15:00-17:00 i Lille UP1

Considerable contemporary research in Denmark looks upon dropout as a
problem and seeks to identify the underlying cause. Dropout is
inevitable if our education is to continue with no initial aptitude
test. Some reports advice educational institutions to focus on social
integration among students and teachers. The focus in this thesis is the
key processes at
the Computing Department at the University of Copenhagen.

Our education rests on many structural assumptions which have to be
broken before real performance improvements are possible. The idea of a
one-for-all education has to be abandoned. Students are different and
have different preferences when it comes to learning, and they must be
treated individually.

The scope of this project was to investigate the role of information
technology in reengineering and come with a strategy which could improve
the output and actual study time of bachelors and masters. After an
initial selection of the intake, the target is: 95% leave our department
with a degree and 90% do it within the prescribed time.

My approach is to reengineer our processes; starting all over. The
strategy includes a brand new design which encompasses a new selection
of students, a fan of new teaching services based on application on the
theory of psychological types in teaching and use of information
technology to enable change of processes.

The step from strategy to new operational processes is tremendous.
Hence, the strategy has yet to prove its viability, but results from
application of psychological types in education in places such as
Stanford University and Aalborg University has proven efficient.
