Selected publications from previous biological research
Sometimes people ask me whether I wish to go back to Biology.
The answer is simple: I never go back to anything.
All the same, I still think that the published work below was worthwhile.
Biological Image Coding
- A.E.C. Pece (1996)
- Negative feedback in biological image coding.
- Proceedings of the 2nd PAMONOP Workshop, Faro, 24-26 November 1995.
- A.E.C. Pece, G.D. Sullivan (1994)
- On top-down processing in vision.
- Proceedings of the SMART workshop, Bari, 20-21 October 1994.
- A.E.C. Pece (1993)
- Some general computational goals of biological vision.
- Lecture notes of the Neural Networks Summer School, Cambridge,
13-16 September 1993.
- A.E.C. Pece (1992)
- Redundancy reduction of a Gabor representation:
- a possible computational role for feedback from primary visual cortex
to lateral geniculate nucleus.
- Artificial Neural Networks 2
(I. Aleksander and J. Taylor, eds.), pp. 865-868.
Elsevier Science Publishers.
Biophysics and Neurophysiology
Before getting involved in computational vision,
I was trained as a biophysicist and neurophysiologist
in Italy (University of Parma) and Canada (University of Alberta).
Selected results of these efforts are easily available:
- A.E.C. Pece, A.S. French (1992)
- Sublinear summation of responses in locust photoreceptors.
- J. Comp. Physiol. A 170: 729-738.
- A.E.C. Pece, A.S. French, M.J. Korenberg, J.E. Kuster (1990)
- Nonlinear mechanisms for gain adaptation in locust photoreceptors.
- Biophys. J. 57: 733-743.
- A.E.C. Pece, A.S. French (1989)
- Single photon responses in locust photoreceptors:
the effects of stimulus location on amplitude and time course.
- J. Comp. Physiol. A 164: 365-375.
Most of the above (and more!) was included in my Ph.D. thesis:
- A.E.C. Pece (1990)
- Single photon responses and their summation in locust photoreceptors.
- Thesis, University of Alberta, Canada.
My M.Sc. thesis is less easily available,
but I have a special affection for it
(partly because it won me a national award):
- A.E.C. Pece (1982)
- Polarization vision and saturation in the optomotor behaviour
of Calliphora erythrocephala . (In Italian.)
- Thesis, University of Parma, Italy.
