Melanie Ganz and Sarah Niebe from DIKU got to the top in Google scholarship
The Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, established by Google in 2004, honors Dr. Anita Borg, a computer science pioneer who dedicated her life to changing the way we think about diversity and technology.
Now in its seventh year, her namesake scholarship continues to support under and post-graduate women completing degrees in computer science and related areas, recognizing and encouraging the next generation of technical leaders and role models.
For the first time, Danish students are amongst the finalists. At DIKU, we are particularly proud of having two of our studens as top runners:
Melanie Ganz, PhD student at DIKU's Image Group, reached the top an received one of the scholarships worth 7000 €.
Sarah Niebe, M.Sc. in computer science and working as a research assistant at the eScience center/the Image Group, was among the finalists.
The scholarship and the ranking among the finalists is accompanied by an invitation to both candidates for the The Google Scholars' Retreat, in Zürich during 28 - 30 June 2010.
DIKU congratulates Melanie Ganz and Sarah Niebe with their good results.
About the candidates
Melanie Ganz recieved her M. Sc. in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (2007). During her master program she spent a year abroad at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. In 2008 Ganz started her Ph.D. studies at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her main research focus is on the application of computer vision and machine learning techniques in medical imaging as well as the statistical interpretations of results retrieved in medical imaging problems. During her Ph.D. Ganz has visited and cooporated with Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK. The Ph.D. project is carried out in cooperation with Nordic Bioscience in Herlev, Denmark. Melanie is expected to receive her Ph.D. degree in the summer of 2011.
Sarah Niebe recieved her M.Sc in Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2009). Her main research focus is physical simulation and rigid body dynamics, as well as optimization methods. Since graduating, Sarah has worked as a research assistant at the eScience Center, University of Copenhagen.
