Application for a desk at DIKU

Master students at DIKU can apply for a desk in an office. You must fill out the form "Application for desk" and submit the form to the office attendant in the "betjentstue" in Universitetsparken 1.

The office attendant can provide information on vacancies.

Desks are allocated according to the principle "first filed, first served".

Mentors for Computer Science Master students

As part of the principles for all COME, Copenhagen Master of Excellence programmes at the University of Copenhagen, every full-degree student must have an individual study plan  – an evolving schedule of course and project work, covering the entire duration of their studies.

To help students develop and sanity-check these study plans, every student is allocated a faculty mentor from among the permanent teaching staff at the Department. Students are expected to meet with their designated mentor at least once per semester, to discuss progress through the programme so far, and make plans for the remaining time.

If the project is not completed, it is noted as a not passed exam.

Learning objectives for projects

Learning objectives consist of general objectives for all projects and objectives specific to each project. The general objectives are described below and the project-specific goals are to be included into the project description attached to the project contract.

General learning objectives:

Graduate Projects must demonstrate skills in applying scientific theories and techniques while working with a professional delineated topic. The student must independently and within the timeframe carry out scientific work within the candidate project and related areas. The student must summarize the findings, their background and implications in a report made in accordance with scientific standards, and orally summarize and explain the work.

After having completed a candidate project, the student must be able to:

  1. Combine relevant computer science and possibly other knowledge to analyze the problem described in the project contract and evaluate previous attempts at solving the specific problem and related problems.
  2. Critically evaluate and select in a motivated way and combine and possibly develop new theories and methods, and use these to make significant contributions to the solution of the problem or the promotion of understanding of the problem.
  3. Provide a consistent, accurate and non-trivial description of all essential parts of the concrete solution with special emphasis on their own contributions.
  4. Objectively and systematically, and where appropriate involving experiments, asses in which areas, it has been possible to solve problem and in which areas it has been impossible. The student must be able to point out weaknesses, strengths and consequences of the solution.
  5. Write a structured and eloquent report in accordance with scientific standards for references and integrity including illustrations, formulas and tables in a scale appropriate to the problem and its solution.
  6. In an oral defence: Orally summarize and explain the work, and discuss theories, methods and results on scientific level.
  7. Meet project-specific learning objectives outlined in the project contract.

Submission Deadline

The project must be submitted for assessment by the day as agreed in the project contract. The submission deadline must be approved by the head of studies and also meet the following rules. If there are multiple authors of a candidate project, the deadline is calculated as equivalent to the largest number of ECTS points awarded for a single student. Those periods are calendar months inclusive vacations and holidays.

Projects of 7.5 ECTS points must be submitted between 1 to 2 months after approval of the project contract. For projects of 15 ECTS points, the period 2 - 4 months after approval of the project contract.

If you have other credit-earning study activities while a candidate project, the deadline may be extended by 1.5 months per 7.5 ECTS other activities. If applicable, indicate the activities in the project contract home.

It the project report is not submitted within the agreed deadline, this corresponds to an absent exam. Reexamination may be agreed with the supervisors and the head of studies.

Submission of the final report

You must send the project in pdf format studieadm@diku.dk with a copy to your supervisor. Please indicate the project number and the name of the supervisor as subject. Annexes to the report (program or source code) may be submitted as zip files. Huge data material may be submitted on CD/DVD in accordance with the supervisor.

Your supervisor and examiner may ask for a paper copy of the report, so you must ask the supervisor whether you must submit prints on paper. The date of receipt of your project report in studieadm@diku.dk valid as date of submission.

Defence

If two or more students work together on a project, the report must include an explanation of the allocation of work. In addition, projects undertaken by two or more persons must be ended in an oral defence in which each participant is examined individually. It is not possible to make a common presentation with the presence of the external examiner.

A defence normally takes no more than an hour.
